Trump Did NOT Win A Majority

It is often said that Trump won an overwhelming majority of the popular vote. While it’s true that Trump did win the popular vote, it is factually incorrect to state that he won a majority of them. In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, approximately 156.3 million Americans cast their votes, marking the second-highest voter turnout in U.S. history, just behind the 158 million votes cast in 2020 .1 As you can see in the Popular Vote Totals below, received 49.81% of the popular vote. Kamala Harris and Other candidates won 50.19% of the vote.

Popular Vote Totals

  • Donald J. Trump (Republican): 77,303,568 votes (49.81%)
  • Kamala D. Harris (Democratic): 75,019,230 votes (48.34%)
  • Other candidates: 2,878,359 votes (1.85%) 2

This election marked the first time since 2004 that a Republican candidate won the national popular vote. Trump’s margin over Harris was approximately 2.3 million votes, or 1.5 percentage points . 3 4

Electoral College Outcome

  • Donald J. Trump: 312 electoral votes
  • Kamala D. Harris: 226 electoral votes 5

Trump’s victory included flipping key battleground states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, all of which had been won by Democrats in 2020. 6
